Notes from the .eth Website Subgroup call that inspired this idea
Draft proposal for DAO-sponsored IPFS nodes
Summary
Fund the creation of open-source infrastructure that will further decentralize .eth websites via IPFS and IPNS (and arweave ?).
Software deliverables
- A software that manages pins on an IPFS node
- Guide so anyone can run a node
- Uptime monitor
- Pin checker
Ongoing support
- 2-3 servers should be run by different teams in the ENS community in different jurisdictions on a server of their choosing (besides AWS, Google Cloud, and Digital Ocean).
- Ideally, each team will use a different server provider.
- These servers will each run an IPFS node with the pinning software mentioned above.
- This should also consider costs of an ETH RPC provider
- Each team will be responsible for their own moderation, which will be public via the pin checker
- A sort of TOS will need to be included in their application for support
Notes
- We should limit the size of the content pinned so one person cant store a huge video and take up all the server resources. Maybe 100mb?
- Size of different types of .eth websites
- FrozenFire claims the total size of “small” website is around 15GB.
